Road Map for the Serra Gaúcha’s Wineries

The main program of those going to Bento Gonçalves is to visit the region’s wineries. After all, people who live in the south of Brazil shall not live by “chimarrão” alone.

Most of the Serra Gaúcha’s Wineries are located in Vale dos Vinhedos (Vineyard’s Valley), about 5km  (3 miles) from Bento Gonçalves, such as Casa Valduga, Marco Luigi, and Miolo. Bento Gonçalves, meanwhile, is 120km (74 miles) from Porto Alegre and 120km from Gramado. The Valley is located between the municipalities of Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi and Monte Belo do Sul.

This is a route that offers options for the best of Brazilian wine tourism. The Valley represents a legacy left by the Italian immigrants who arrived in the Serra Gaúcha in the 19th century.

Vale dos Vinhedos was the first region in Brazil to be recognized as a Geographical Indication in 2002 and became a Denomination of Origin in 2012, which means that products must comply with certain rules regarding grape cultivation and to the elaboration of wine.

Along the route, there are more than thirty wineries, which are open to visitation all year round. Visits can be paid or not, depending on the winery, and usually offer tasting.

Complementing the tourist offer, hotels, restaurants, art studios, cheese shops, jellies, and sweets are distributed in the region. Strolling along this route is very reminiscent of Tuscany, the region of Italy.

This data below is from August 2016. To avoid hassles, it is better to check if there has been any change.
